AUDITIONS

Hickory Community Theatre encourages people of all races, ethnicities, identities, body types, physical and cognitive abilities to audition. Theatre is for everyone, and HCT believes in representation and equity for all.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS & Roles and requirements: Narrator An intellectual and pleasant story-teller who helps to orchestrate the show and illustrate lessons to the audience. Gender: male presenting Vocal range top: E4 Vocal range bottom: G2 Cinderella A young, earnest maiden who is constantly mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters. Gender: female presenting Age: 20 to 30 Vocal range top: G5 Vocal range bottom: G3 Jack The feckless Giant killer who is 'almost a man.' He is adventurous, naive, energetic, and bright-eyed. Gender: male presenting Age: 20 to 30 Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: B2 Jack's Mother Browbeating and weary, Jack's protective mother who is independent, bold, and strong-willed. Gender: female presenting Age: 50 to 65 Vocal range top: Gb5 Vocal range bottom: Bb3 The Baker A harried and insecure baker who is simple and loving, yet protective of his family. He wants his wife to be happy and is willing to do anything to ensure her happiness but refuses to let others fight his battles. Gender: male presenting Age: 35 to 45 Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: Ab2 The Baker's Wife Determined and bright woman who wishes to be a mother. She leads a simple, yet satisfying life and is very low-maintenance yet proactive in her endeavors. Gender: female presenting Age: 35 to 45 Vocal range top: G5 Vocal range bottom: F3 Cinderella's Stepmother The mean-spirited, demanding stepmother of Cinderella. Gender: female presenting Age: 40 to 50 Vocal range top: F#5 Vocal range bottom: A3 Florinda And Lucinda Cinderella's stepsisters who are black of heart. They follow in their mother's footsteps of abusing Cinderella. Gender: female presenting Age: 25 to 35 Vocal range top: Ab5 Vocal range bottom: C4 Little Red Ridinghood A spoiled young girl who is strong-willed, quick-wited, fearless, yet youthful and naive. Gender: female presenting Age: 15 to 20 Vocal range top: F5 Vocal range bottom: Bb3 The Witch Sarcastic, ugly-then-gorgeous, obsessive protector of Rapunzel who is straightforward and aggressive. Gender: female presenting Age: 45 to 55 Vocal range top: G5 Vocal range bottom: F3 Cinderella's Mother Deceased with her soul guarding and aiding her daughter from a tree. Gender: female presenting Age: 40 to 55 Vocal range top: F4 Vocal range bottom: E4 Mysterious Man A mischievous vagrant and nosy meddler. He is a good-natured protector and observer. Gender: male presenting Age: 50 to 65 Vocal range top: Eb4 Vocal range bottom: G2 Wolf Hungry and insatiable hunter who takes advantage of the weak by misleading and captivating his prey. Gender: male presenting Age: 30 to 35 Vocal range top: Gb4 Vocal range bottom: Bb2 Rapunzel A loopy-but-lovely maiden who is sheltered by the Witch and terribly lonely. She yearns to experience the world. Gender: female presenting Age: 20 to 30 Vocal range top: A5 Vocal range bottom: B3 Cinderella's Prince Vain and gorgeous, he is a disloyal lover who is currently searching for the next new, exciting thing. Gender: male presenting Age: 30 to 40 Vocal range top: F4 Vocal range bottom: B2 Rapunzel's Prince Just as vain and gorgeous as his Prince brother, he is always chasing the newest, most exiting endeavor. Gender: male presenting Age: 30 to 40 Vocal range top: E4 Vocal range bottom: C#3 Giant Voiceover. The Giant's wife is an angry and vengeful 'monster.' She is seeking restitution for her loss. Gender: female presenting Age: 40 to 60

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS & Roles and requirements: Daisy Hilton (Mezzo with belt, Big range, up to a sustained high G): The dominant and more outspoken of the twins, her dream is to become a famous actress/performer/celebrity. Violet Hilton: (Mezzo/Soprano with belt; Big range, up to a sustained high B): The shy and more composed of the twins, her dream is to marry and raise a family at home. NOTE: Since the Hilton sisters were conjoined twins, attached at the lower spine/hip, actresses interested in these roles MUST be comfortable acting, moving, and dancing in tandem with another actress. Terry Conner (Baritone with strong upper range; Low G to a sustained high F#, and running high G): A talent scout/agent for the Vaudeville circuit. Handsome, smooth/suave, leading man type. Daisy’s love interest. Buddy Foster (Tenor; big range, up to a sustained high A): Usher turned Entertainer. Bright and energetic, but a bit naive. A song and dance man. Violet’s love interest. Jake (tenor/baritone with strong top range): African-American. Sideshow Foreman. Very strong physical presence even when silent. Secretly in love with Violet. Strong singer who can move well. Jake is also the Cannibal King. The Boss(Tenor): Formidable presence, sleazy, mean owner/MC of the Side Show. FEATURED & ENSEMBLE ROLES The entire ensemble will double in a number of smaller parts with featured lines, as well as singing throughout the show. The roles listed below are their featured roles in the “Side Show,” but they will also play reporters, vaudevillians, spectators, Follies performers, party guests, and Carny hawkers. Actors with special skills, especially jumps and acrobatics, are a plus. Fortune Teller: Strong belter/gospel voice. Reptile Man: Half man/half reptile. Snake Lady: Snake Charmer. 6th Exhibit: Religious Martyr. Dolly Dimples: Plus-sized woman Sheik: Middle Eastern character Harem Girls: (2-4) The Sheiks “girls” Bearded Lady: open to any gender, will dress in female-presenting clothing Fakir: Far East/Indian character The Geek: "Refined but deadly." Must be comfortable with blood/gore. Roustabouts: (4) well-built "Carnies," they are part of the Side Show ensemble who play a multitude of roles, but they also move the set throughout the show IN CHARACTER, and they appear as dancers in production.
