Technical Volunteer Roles
Are you interested in learning more about theatre production from behind the scenes? Join the
Hickory Community Theatre’s Scenic Department Volunteer Program and gain hands-on
experience in set building, painting, prop maintenance, and more.
This is an exciting opportunity for creative individuals—especially students, artists, makers, and
theatre lovers—to contribute directly to the magic of live performance.
We offer three primary volunteer areas, based on your skills and interests:
Carpentry
- Work directly with our Scenic Carpenter on the construction of sets for mainstage
productions. Volunteers in this area will:
- Assist with building flats, platforms, and scenic structures
- Safely use power tools and construction techniques
- Work on-site in our scenic shop under guided supervision
- No prior carpentry experience is required—just a willingness to learn and follow safety
protocols.
Scenic Art
Join our Scenic Charge Artist in transforming raw surfaces into immersive environments. Scenic
Art volunteers will:
- Help with painting, texturing, and faux finishing of scenic elements
- Learn about theatrical painting techniques and materials
- A background in painting or art is helpful, but not required—we welcome all levels of
experience.
Shop Organization & Props
If you love working behind the scenes and keeping things running smoothly, this is a perfect fit.
Volunteers in this area will:
- Help organize and maintain our scenic and prop storage areas
- Assist in prop repair and minor crafting projects
- Support the overall workflow and cleanliness of the scenic shop
- This role is ideal for detail-oriented individuals who like problem-solving and working
with their hands.
