Scurius considers himself a grey squirrel more sinned against than sinning. But when this once-great leader turns his bushy back on the needs of the starving fox squirrels, the resulting strife and scheming threatens to split the very tree Scurius and his family call home.
A dark, timely satire about the perils of economic inequality, THE SQUIRRELS plays in the Firemen's Kitchen from October 18th through November 2nd.
Making her Hickory Community Theatre debut as Chordata, the noble daughter with compassion for all squirrel-kind, is newcomer Cate Jo.
Raised in Alabama and now residing in Charlotte ("I followed my older sister, like a copycat"), Jo studied theatre, math and classics at Vanderbilt University. When not working in the world of finance or performing on stage, Jo enjoys cuddling with her cat Peaches—aka,"the cutest kitty in the entire world."
Jo previously appeared in AND THEN THERE WERE NONE and MOUSETRAP at Lee Street Theatre, HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL at Piedmont Players Theatre, and SISTER MARY IGNATIUS EXPLAINS IT ALL FOR YOU at the Comedy Arts Theater of Charlotte.
"Everyone has been very welcoming," Jo says of her experience at Hickory Community Theatre. And while we hope she won't be called upon to do a one-person performance of THE SQUIRRELS, Jo does describe herself as "the actor most likely to get other people's lines stuck in my head."
Performances of THE SQUIRRELS are Fridays and Saturdays, October 18th through November 2nd at 7:30PM; Sundays, October 20th & 27th at 2:30PM, and, Thursday, October 31st at 7:30PM. Tickets are $18 for adults, $12 for youth and students.
Tickets are available online at hickorytheatre.org, or by phone at 828-328-2283. The theatre box office is open from 12-5 PM Wednesday through Friday, or one half-hour before a performance.
THE SQUIRRELS is rated R. It contains adult language, squirrel-on-squirrel violence, and yes, nuts. Under 17 requires adult guardian.
THE SQUIRRELS is produced in association with Diane's Shelter. The Hickory Community Theatre’s 76th season is sponsored by Shurtape Technologies, Protection Products, Inc., A Cleaner World, and LifeRootz. HCT is a Funded Affiliate of Arts Culture Catawba and receives additional support from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
