Disasterpiece Theatre: Meet THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG'S Andrew Turnbull

A hilarious whodunit filled with mystery, mishaps and theatrical mayhem, THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG runs in the Jeffers Theatre at HCT through April 1st.

Returning to the HCT stage as the unflappable, if occasionally line-challenged, Dennis/Perkins is Andrew Turnbull.

Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Turnbull now resides in Conover. Turnbull studied English, Theatre Arts and Music at Western Piedmont and Catawba Valley community colleges, and was a Graduate Men's Division Winner for the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Turnbull is a makeup specialist whose work has been featured by Sephora and NARS, who named Turnbull Cosmetics Artist of the Year in 2018.

A self-described "legit theatre nerd," Turbull has performed, directed, designed, and written original plays for numerous theaters in the area. Turnbull first appeared at HCT as The Emcee in 2010's CABARET, winning a Kay Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor for the performance. Turnbull has also appeared at The Green Room Community Theatre in INTO THE WOODS, and in RENT for Flowertown Players. For Old Colony Players, Turnbull has performed in OLIVER!, THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW and FROM THIS DAY FORWARD, and was Artistic Director for MISTER ROBERTS. Turnbull, whose directorial debut came at age 17, has written and directed three original works: THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW for Old Colony Players, as well as DEAD GIVEAWAY and CHRISTMAS IN OZ at Newton Performing Arts Center.

For Turnbull, performing in THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG was not an opportunity to be passed up. "I had seen the show on Broadway before its premiere. I knew this was going to be an unbeatable chance to be part of an iconic ensemble." Of Dennis/Perkins, Turnbull says: "You can feel his positive energy and enthusiasm."

Turnbull is proud to be part of an ever-growing artistic community in the area, and appreciates how HCT remains such a vital presence in that community. "The physical space itself—the aesthetic vibe and the feeling of being on stage. Pure magic."

Performances of THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG are Fridays and Saturdays, March 17th through April 1st at 7:30 PM; Sunday, March 19th and 26th at 2:30 PM; and, Thursday, March 30th at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $16 for adults, $10 for youth and students.

Tickets are available online at hickorytheatre.org, or by phone at 828-328-2283. The theatre box office is open from 12-5 PM Wednesday through Friday, or one half-hour before a performance.

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG is rated G.

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG is produced in association with CommScope and Green Park Dentistry. The Hickory Community Theatre’s 74th season is sponsored by Paramount Automotive, SunBelt Xpress and Frye Regional Medical Center. HCT is a funded affiliate of the United Arts Council of Catawba County.
